Policing: a Challenging Task.

... the MOPOL 10 SQUADRON on the move in a Saxon APC in Bauchi, NE Nigeria

Worldwide, the police face the challenge of protecting law and order. How are they coping with these
challenges globally. We live in a world full of evil, and it is just below the vencer of civilization and we need some sorts of protection, and some level of enforcement of the law to reduce the rate of these outrageous trend. Although, most of us have heard about brutality, corruption, indifference and abuse of power on the part of the police, the incident vary in degree from country to country.

In some countries the level of these practices outgrows the advantages applicable to their services, but nevertheless the wave and rate of crime in some countries is not something to write home about. This in effect connotes that policing is inevitable in our society. It is not only crime duties that informed the setting up of this department, but also other functional services like, community and social services.

Accordingly, it's a reality that only 20 to 30 percent of police work account on crime, it is much a community and social service which revolve round many areas and facets of our daily interaction. sometimes on a good day on patrol, one could attend to series of issues ranging from, traffic accident, a crime intervention, a sudden death, and a confused elderly person in need of assistant and or returning a lost child or to help a crime victim cope with his or her emotional trauma.

Some officers are happy and feel satisfying doing the best they can to render humanitarian help to others. They wanted to be there for people and bear the burden for them especially in issues of emergency. Meanwhile, some join the force because of their personal and selfish interests and that is "corruption".

Although it is in extreme cases that corruption scandals are pronounce and dealt with by the police chief, it is noteworthy that some congenial excuse are given when issues of corruption are raised, like low wages, and indoctrination by their superiors. Some start out with high principles but then succumb to the influence of corrupt colleagues and the debased standards of the criminal world with which they are involved.

Although police provide an invaluable service, without police we could probably be vested with anarchy, but even with the presence of police, are we really safe? Are they really our friends?

We can not really rely on the police even when they are dedicated to preventing crime, and to save the society from crime, studies have proved that with the three main activities of police, patrolling, responding and investigating, it do not prevent crime. Even the Emergency response squad or (Quick Response Squad) does not deter much crime either.

Police themselves are aware of this fact, which is why they obliged that "unless they can arrive at the scene of a crime in less than a minute, they are unlikely to catch the culprit" Criminals seems to equally be aware that such speed is not feasible and is very rare to arrive at a scene in just a minute. Even when detectives do successfully convicts and imprison criminals, it does not prevent crime.

The fact that the police are not able to prevent crime should not come as a surprise to us and should not be worrisome, it is generally understood that social conditions outside the control of the police as well as outside the control of the criminal justice system as a whole, determine crime level in communities.
