Types of Pollution, Effect and Control Measures

Example of Water Pollution

The committee on Pollution of the United States' National Research Council defines pollution as " An undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of our air, land and water that may or will harmfully affect human life or that of other desirable species, our industrial processes, living conditions, cultural assets or that may or will waste or deteriorate our raw material resources (1965).

Pollution is a disorder within an environment and is a by-product of energy conversion and the use of contaminant into the environment and it is mostly created by human actions but less of natural factor. Pollution in it entirety is dangerous, deadly and detrimental to life. It is a defilement, a mischief, a perturbation, and a reduction in the value of an object or thing.(Ekuri and Eze, 2001).

\      It is harmful to the entire environment and to the health and well-being of all living things.Pollutant release into the air, water and soil can find their way into the human body as a result of breathing, eating and drinking. Every year in the United States alone factories release over 3 million tons of toxic chemicals into the land, air and water.

This hazardous waste causes us to lose 15 million acres of land every year. This is just a minute cause of the problem of pollution. But there arose other causes like commercial waste, agricultural practices, everyday human activities and most notably our mode of transportation. Everywhere you go on daily basis there are traces of pollution and related activities in the environment.

Evidently, pollution however one defines it depends on which component of the earth is contaminated. It may be the air, water, land or even vegetation. This is because what constitutes water pollution differs from the constituents of air and even land or vegetational pollution. In the above light, it will be essential to ponder into the different kinds of pollution that is infringing and constituting an eyesore to our environment.

                                                          AIR POLLUTION

Air Pollution

This is the accumulation of hazardous substances into the atmosphere that endangered human life and other living organisms as well as depletion of the life blanket known as "OZONE LAYER". The sources of air pollution are numerous ranging from automobile emission in form of heavy smoke from industrial machines and cars, generating plants, bush burning, flaring of natural gas, tobacco smoke, dust from volcanic eruption, wildfires, aerosol sprays, combustion of coal. etc.

Although preventive measures abound such as enforcement of legislation on smoking, zero tolerance to fumes emission from heavy industries and cars and imbibing maintenance culture with our cars and industrial machines to check the excesses of smoke emission these and many more if adhered to will reduce this infringements to its desired formula,

Whereas the enormous impacts occasioned by air pollution to the health of the citizenry is outrageous, ranging from irritation of the lungs, asthma and bronchitis, impairment of mental reasoning, cardiovascular or heart diseases, acute exposure to hydrocarbon causes eye, nose and throat disorder and above all the depletion of ozone layer and global climate causes skin cancer and sun burns and cause further damage to other living organisms.

                                                              WATER POLLUTION

  Water Pollution in India Poster

One of the greatest environmental problem today is water pollution. It is the introduction of chemical, biological and physical matter into large volumes of water, this in effect degrades the quality of life that lives in it and consume it.

Much have been said in days past in respect of water pollution and the damage it has effected in regards to aquatic life, but all landed in deaf ears as little or nothing have been done to submerged this as a casualty. Reasonable sources are responsible for this unwholesome trend; viz animal waste, factories, oil spills, mining, refineries, waste treatment facilities, pesticides, herbicides fertilizers, human sewage, household chemicals etc.

There are series of ways to adopt in preventing this and this has to do with, not throwing trash and other harmful substances or chemicals into water supplies. Industries should be guided on the proper and most effective way of waste disposal. Environmental impact assessment must be done at least yearly by waste generated industries and must be evaluated by the necessary agencies of government.

                                                               LAND POLLUTION

Land Pollution-Reflection

As stated before in this article, land pollution is the contamination of the earth's natural land surface by industrial, commercial, domestic and agricultural activities. Some of the main contributors to land pollution are; Industrial factories, oil refineries, mining, human sewage, littering, deforestation, chemical and nuclear plant, urbanization, overcrowded landfill, construction debris etc.

Its impacts to life is tremendous, apart from the health implication, solid waste or land pollution is an eyesore, a nuisance and a shock to the environment and the stinking fumes that comes out from it is an assault to the sensory organs. The possible ways of preventing it is by burying, recycling, sorting out of waste at source and application of biodegradable components on farm for manure.

HOW TO GET INVOLVE IN POLLUTION PREVENTION

 Water Pollution Control Facility

The issue of involvement in pollution prevention is to practice the already stated mitigation strategies in this article by participating in the process, creating awareness as to the dangers of pollution to the populace in form of seminars and workshops by environmental protection and other related agencies and non governmental agencies with passion for nature and the environment as well.

Developing skills in the citizenry as to coping with the required strategies with a view to reducing and preventing pollution in our environment. There should be legislation and its enforcement in respect of smoking to avoid unhealthy behaviors in the society.

All must join in the campaign against pollution as it is a major danger to life, we must not sit on fence watching the disastrous effect of pollution eating deep into the society and the world at large.
Efforts must be made by the international community to stem the tide of this outrageous and atrocious acts by some countries toward pollution legislation.

In conclusion, HIV/AIDS is pronounce deadly but there exist the silent killer who is eating deep into the annals of our life and yet we are watching.
Therefore all hands must be on deck for us to reduce or if possible stem the menace of the scourge.
